Creativity has always been my go-to outlet for expression.
It all started with music. I learned to play flute in elementary school and continued in middle school. I became more and more fascinated with orchestral music, especially thanks to having played the themes to Harry Potter and Gladiator at our concerts. In 8th grade, I decided to learn guitar and bass, teaching myself by learning to read tabs and plenty of practice. As I learned, I would record ideas for riffs I came up with, trying to compose songs around them. During my freshman year of high school, I played in my school’s percussion ensemble and was introduced to the band Tool, who remain my biggest musical inspiration.
Through this time, I also explored creative writing in various forms, including short stories, song lyrics, and blogging. I still write during my free time and have expanded into screenplays since studying film in college.
I took four Digital Design and Visualization classes in high school, which served as my first foray into creating new visual experiences. I learned 3ds Max, excelling and exploring on my own after falling in love with the potential of the program. After first learning 3ds Max, I began learning Revit from the main DDV teacher, who had a background in architecture. I learned architectural standards and how to design new components to meet different needs.
At this point, I realized that video games were the most exciting outlet for me that actually incorporated all of my interests and passions. I found Microsoft’s XNA and began teaching myself C# so I could begin creating interactive worlds.
All of this lead me to studying Interactive Multimedia at The College of New Jersey, a program designed to explore media and technology in different industries, from web design and mobile apps, to film and interactive exhibits. Discussions not only helped me understand the elements and technology of each discipline, but caused me to think about how — since video games are already the merging of so many artistic media — parts of their design could be or already are integrated into the design of video games.
Learning about new technologies and media has always been my passion, and I will always take the opportunity to delve deeper to become more knowledgeable and creative.
